Kentucky Oaks About To Start

Often lost amid the furor and festivities of the Kentucky Derby is the Kentucky Oaks, a race that – like the Derby – has been run since 1875, making this the 144th consecutive celebration of the Lillies for the Fillies. Held on Friday, May 4 (5 PM-6:30 PM, NBC), the Kentucky Oaks is a Grade I stakes race exclusively for fillies, with a $1 million purse and as much world-class competition as its colt-dominated counterpart.

The 2018 Kentucky Oaks is ready to run after a week of shifting odds and track tune-ups, and though the course surface is expected to be muddy or even sloppy, the overwhelming favorites – Monomoy Girl and Midnight Bisou – shouldn’t have much trouble finishing in the money.

The 2018 Kentucky Oaks has a 14-horse field, and the following fillies are sitting atop the late odds boards:

  • 1. Monomoy Girl 2/1 (+200) – Gate 14
  • 2. Midnight Bisou 9/4 (+225) – Gate 10
  • 3. Coach Rocks 9/1 (+900) – Gate 2
  • 4. Rayya 11/1 (+1100) – Gate 7
  • 5. My Miss Lilly 12/1 (+1200) – Gate 11
  • 6. Take Charge Paula 14/1 (+1400) – Gate 9

With a comparatively poor gate draw, Monomoy Girl – who has won 5 of her 6 career races – took a bit of a hit on the betting boards, shrinking the gap between her and Midnight Bisou. Midnight Bisou should benefit slightly from a position in closer to the inner fence, as the outermost horse (in this case Monomoy Girl) will have markedly more distance to cover on the diagonal to shrink the track. The strategy involved in moving her over across all of the other competitors will be interesting to watch.
