Kyrie Irving Trade Talk Puts Cleveland Futures On The Move

With his recent trade request, the NBA’s number-one second fiddle has put Cleveland’s expected future and futures in flux. Most notably, several high-profile USA online sportsbooks have completely removed the Cavaliers from their future odds until the situation normalizes, with a few of them instead offering props on where Irving will be suiting up for the first game of the 2017-2018 season.

And even that’s not particularly stable. BetOnline, perhaps the highest-profile book offering action on Irving, is experiencing a lot of movement in that regard. A day after news of Irving’s desires to get away from LeBron’s ineffectual front-office meddling broke, BetOnline had him at -300 to stay with the three-time defending Eastern Conference champions. A day later, and those betting odds have fallen to +400 as news reports have since exposed a bigger rift than previously believed. (The Cavs signing Derrick Rose to a one-year contract probably didn’t help massage Irving’s ego, either.) Conversely, the star point guard’s odds to join the New York Knicks or San Antonio Spurs have closed slightly, and odds on Irving suiting up for the field (any other NBA team) have shrunk dramatically from an opening of +1200 to a now-favorite +270.

Amusingly, BetOnline is also offering action on Irving’s “Next Destination,” with “The Moon” coming in as a -600 favorite while “Mars” is more of a longshot at +400. Good luck collecting, though, as Irving would likely fall off the edge of the earth and suffer a career-ending knee injury in any attempt to get to either of those other flat and/or imaginary celestial bodies.

Still, it’s a slightly safer bet that Irving stays in the NBA. If he leaves the Cavs, though, many moneyline analysts expect the Cleveland team’s odds to win a league championship would drop from +400 to +700.
