  • Mobile sports betting continues to dominate the West Virginia sports betting market.
  • Only two percent of sports betting handle happened in retail sports betting windows.
  • Wheeling Island Casino and Mardi Gras Casino are the only two sportsbooks still closed in the state.
  • The odds that this rate continues into the NFL season are slim, as retail books will be open to the public.

WHEELING, W. Va. – In the past two weeks, around 98 percent of West Virginia sports betting took place on mobile sports betting apps.

The COIVD-19 (coronavirus) pandemic has taken its toll on the sports betting industry.

Many sports leagues have still not resumed regular play and many sportsbooks are closed across the country. However, there some states that launched with online sportsbooks. Thanks to this, these states have been able to continue sports betting operations despite the global pandemic.

West Virginia is one of these states that have continued to accept sports bets.

Almost All The Action Is Online

West Virginia has recently released their revenue report and it shows how much the coronavirus pandemic has affected their betting market.

In the past two weeks, casinos in West Virginia have started to allow customers back in their doors.

That means that retail sportsbooks are making a comeback. These casinos are only allowed to be filled to 50% capacity so the customer base is limited. Not only that, but not all casinos have reopened to the public.

Wheeling Island Casino and Mardi Gras Casino are still closed to the public and both casinos have sportsbooks.

Thanks to that, only two percent of the sports betting handle in the last two weeks came from retail sportsbooks. That amounts to $46,757.80 of the total handle can be attributed to retail sportsbooks.

That means that in two weeks, about $2.6 million of the sports betting handle came from online sportsbooks.

West Virginia has online sportsbooks such as FanDuel, DraftKings, and BetMGM available to them. Despite the fact that most major sports leagues in the U.S. are down, there still action to be had during the pandemic.

On top of that, having the ability to register for an online sportsbook remotely is saving the sports betting industry in West Virginia.

Things are looking to upswing in the state as well. It is likely that the Wheeling Island and Mardi Gras Casinos will soon reopen their doors and start taking bets again.

On top of that, various sports leagues will be resuming play soon. That will help West Virginia’s economy recover from the effects of the coronavirus.
