Patrick Queen And Ravens Make Perfect Duo, Def ROY Not Out Of Sight

  • Chase Young is the favorite to win the defensive rookie of the year award at +450 odds.
  • Isaiah Simmons (+800) and Patrick Queen (+1000) round out the top 3.
  • Queen has seen his odds become shorter since the NFL Draft happened a month ago.
  • With playing time and defensive snap counts, Queen should see his odds continue to become shorter.

BALTIMORE – Though the Baltimore Ravens flourished on the offensive side of the ball this past NFL season, it is their defense that leads the culture of the organization.

The Ravens made this message clear when they drafted Patrick Queen with their first round pick (28) of the NFL Draft.

Projected to be a starter for the Ravens right out of the gate, betting on Queen to win the defensive rookie of the year isn’t a farfetched proposal.

When odds were first posted, Queen was positioned at +1400 – well behind Chase Young and Isaiah Simmons. Since the late April posting, Queen has moved up at online sportsbooks, positioning himself at +1000 to take the achievement.

NFL Defensive Rookie Of The Year Odds

  • Chase Young +450
  • Isaiah Simmons +800
  • Patrick Queen +1000
  • A.J. Epensesa +2000
  • Kenneth Murray

There is no doubt that the award is Chase Young’s to lose; however, Queen makes an excellent argument for why he could challenge the Washington Redskins’ edge rusher.

Queen is the perfect linebacker for the Ravens’ system. He can get in the backfield to make stops – as evident from his eight tackles for loss (TFL) during his junior year – but also has the explosive ability to be all over the field at once.

As a former running back with nearly 1500 yards and just under 20 touchdowns in high school, Queen understands being in the right spot at the right time.

With eight tackles (2.5 for loss) in the National Championship game, Queen was named the Defensive MVP and will bring that same mindset into the pros.

As expressed by Michael Renner of Pro Football Focus after Round 1, Queen is the perfect fit.

“Queen is exactly what the Ravens defense has been missing — a weapon as a blitzer who’s also versatile enough to cover the slot in a pinch,” wrote Renner. “Queen allowed only 23-of-33 targets to be caught for 171 yards in his coverage all year long.”

While Washington’s Chase Young may lose some opportunities with teams likely running the ball heavily on the Redskins, Queen will have the opposite effect.

With an offense that is sure to keep the defense on the field perhaps more than they want to be, Queen will have plenty of opportunities to make plays in the NFL. The more plays he makes, the more NFL betting sites will shorten his odds.

With that, it may be thought that only Isaiah Simmons stands in the way of Queen taking home the defensive rookie of the year honors. Either way it ends out, the NFL season will bring sports bettors and fans a dose of reality that everyone’s been missing.
