- Assembly Bill A5971 was introduced in New Jersey.
- It would ban micro sports betting.
TRENTON, N.J. - Assemblyman Dan Hutchinson has introduced Assembly Bill A5971, a proposal to ban micro betting in New Jersey.
According to the New Jersey assembly report, the bill would prohibit sports wagering licensees in New Jersey from offering live proposition wagers during sporting events.
New legal frameworks reflect growing concern over how technology-driven betting markets may exacerbate addiction and compromise sports integrity.
The legislation aims to address growing concerns regarding excessive and compulsive gambling. According to Hutchinson’s office, the Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey reported a 277% spike in calls to the council’s problem gambling since New Jersey sportsbooks went live in June 2018.
Micro betting has surged in popularity across New Jersey’s licensed online sportsbooks, but Hutchison argues the format encourages cyclical, impulsive wagering that leaves bettors little time to pause.
“The pace of micro betting is designed to keep people gambling constantly, making one impulsive bet after another with little time to think,” he said.

CCGNJ Executive Director Luis Del Orbe added:
“Micro betting can accelerate the path to problem gambling, especially among youths and individuals with compulsive patterns… eliminating it would be an essential step toward protecting citizens”
Licensed sportsbooks face fines of $500–$1,000 per violation, classified as disorderly persons offenses.
If enacted, New Jersey would become the first U.S. state to explicitly ban micro betting through legislation. This may signal a shift in states with online sportsbooks toward more cautious, health-conscious oversight of emerging wagering formats.
