Betting On The NBA

The NBA is as popular as it has ever been in the United States, and has certainly gained international appeal with many of the game's top players coming from outside of the country. That has allowed the NBA to grow and expand to different fan bases around the world. It's also been a direct reason that betting on the NBA is extremely popular. Whether bettors are wagering on game lines during the regular season, the playoffs, or on into the NBA Finals for the eventual champion, there are plenty of opportunities and betting lines to wager on the sport.

Here at USAOnlineSportsbooks.com, our mission is twofold for NBA betting. First, we want to provide online betters their options for legally placing a wager. How The Coronavirus Affected The NBA

The NBA has announced a plan to return to action by July 30th, today! The setup involves 22 teams, 13 from the Western Conference, and 9 from the Eastern Conference. Each team will travel to Orlando, Florida, where the remainder of the season will be played out. The teams were chosen based on whether or not they could reasonably make the playoffs still. The teams will play eight further regular-season games to determine the seeding, and then the playoffs will begin. The season and the playoffs could take a very long time, and the latest possible date for a Finals game seven would be in October. It remains to be seen how this would affect the 2020-2021 NBA season, as they have scheduled the NBA Draft for October 15th, 2020. Overall, this is great news - the NBA is back! The games kick off tonight with Jazz/Pelicans and Lakers/Clippers. Welcome back!

NBA Game Of The Day - August 3, 2020

Los Angeles Lakers vs. Utah Jazz

The Los Angeles Lakers wasted no time in making their presence known in the bubble, defeating the Clippers on the first day of the restarted season. The Jazz also won that day, beating out the New Orleans Pelicans. Now, those two teams are set to face off, with the Lakers boasting a serious advantage on the spread. The Lakers are heavily favored and the odds show no signs of moving. The Jazz are not an amazing team, they’re just a good one, while the Lakers are one of the best teams in the league. That said, the loss to Toronto reveals that plenty of teams that may have less talent than Los Angeles can still compete with them on a night to night basis with tough play and good defense. The Jazz can bring those elements to the table, but can they execute well enough to cover the spread or pull off the win? Time will tell.

Current NBA Title Odds

The NBA is coming back, which means that NBA futures betting odds are unfrozen and available on all of the major online sportsbooks. The NBA is planning to reopen in Orlando, in an attempt to keep the players safe from the COVID-19 pandemic. Players are currently already there, quarantining and getting ready for the season. There are 22 teams in Orlando, so the list of teams with odds to win the title is cut by eight.

Odds To WIN NBA Title:

  • Los Angeles Lakers +200
  • Milwaukee Bucks +280
  • Los Angeles Clippers +300
  • Boston Celtics +1300
  • Houston Rockets +1300
  • Toronto Raptors +1600
  • Philadelphia 76ers +2000
  • Denver Nuggets +3000
  • Dallas Mavericks +4000
  • Miami Heat +4000
  • Utah Jazz +6600
  • New Orleans Pelicans +8000
  • Oklahoma City Thunder +8000
  • Portland Trail Blazers +8000
  • Brooklyn Nets +15000
  • Indiana Pacers +20000
  • Memphis Grizzlies +25000
  • Sacramento Kings +50000
  • Phoenix Suns +75000
  • San Antonio Spurs +75000
  • Orlando Magic +100000
  • Washington Wizards +100000

When examining how the odds have changed over the course of the season, one trend is hard to ignore - the rise of the Los Angeles Lakers. This is a hard trend to evaluate due to how many fans of the Lakers there are - they are one of the premier teams in the league. A fanbase of that size, especially an international fanbase, can move lines simply by being homers. For example, since the NBA was announced to resume, the Lakers odds have gotten shorter, and the Bucks odds have gotten longer - but nothing has changed! The teams are exactly the same, no games have been played, but the lines moved anyway. This demonstrates the power of hype and a large fanbase, but also the power of having a rested Lebron James on your roster.

Bettors can also wager on who will win the two conferences in the NBA, the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference. The Western Conference is sending more teams to the bubble, and as such, there are more teams who are technically in contention to win it. That said, these teams are vanishingly unlikely to do so, and most of them will be eliminated by the end of the regular season.

2020 Eastern Conference - Odds To Win:

  • Milwaukee Bucks -185
  • Boston Celtics +550
  • Toronto Raptors +600
  • Miami Heat +1100
  • Philadelphia 76ers +750
  • Indiana Pacers +5000
  • Brooklyn Nets +8000
  • Orlando Magic +25000
  • Washington Wizards +25000

2020 Western Conference - Odds To Win:

  • Los Angeles Lakers +135
  • Los Angeles Clippers +180
  • Houston Rockets +650
  • Denver Nuggets +1000
  • Utah Jazz +2600
  • Dallas Mavericks +1800
  • New Orleans Pelicans +4000
  • Portland Trail Blazers +6000
  • Oklahoma City Thunder +4500
  • Memphis Grizzlies +10000
  • San Antonio Spurs +25000
  • Phoenix Suns +20000
  • Sacramento Kings +20000

Betting On The NBA Awards

The NBA has many honorable awards that are excellent to receive. Below you will find a list of the many honors an NBA player can receive. This matters to bettors because there are always odds to bet on who will win these awards during the season.

NBA MVP

The MVP award is the award given to the most valuable player in the NBA. There has been much debate about what this actually means, as certain stars tend to not play as hard in the regular season compared to the playoffs, and certain stars tend to falter in the playoffs, but generally, it is given to whoever had the best regular season in the NBA.

In 2018-19, the award was given to Giannis Antetokounmpo or the Greek Freak for his first MVP award. Giannis won over the strong contention of Rockets' star James Harden, who was second in MVP voting for the third time in four years. In 2019-20, Giannis Antetokounmpo is once again the betting favorite to win the NBA MVP award, being the best player on the best team in the league and putting up insane counting stats. Lebron James is his only real competition.

NBA Rookie Of The Year

The Rookie of the Year award has typically gone to the best rookie, although this year the field looks divided. Ja Morant of the Memphis Grizzlies has been absolutely dominant throughout the season, propelling Memphis into unexpected playoff contention during the season. However, number one pick Zion Williamson of the New Orleans Pelicans was injured for most of the season, and has come back with a vengeance – the rookie is already one of the best players in the league but has only played a few games. The question for voters now is a question of what to value – consistent play at a high level or fewer games at a notably higher level.

Tips For Betting On NBA Basketball

Follow The Schedule - In the NBA, teams play 82 regular season games plus playoffs for those who make them. That is a ton of games to bet on. But within those schedules, there are some chances to take when a team makes a long road trip. This could be an opportunity to jump on a team that hasn't performed well on the road, and take advantage of the knowledge that you have. This requires you to follow the schedule during the season, and see what is on the horizon.

Do Your Research For The Day/Night's Matchups - Just like you wouldn't want to go into an investment without doing some research into it, the same philosophy should be applied to any and all bets that you make. You want to make sure that you research a game you are looking to bet on prior to placing your wager. Whether this includes looking at matchup history, betting trends, standings, or a variety of other angles, it's important to do this. Oddsmakers do their homework to try and trip you up, so you should certainly do yours to flip the edge back to center, or even in your favor.

Spread Your Wagers Out - You have a better chance at winning if you choose to spread your wagers out that you make. We don't mean over time. This applies to bettors who like to wager pretty frequently. It's a good idea to look at several different bets, and perhaps place some money down on all of them. It doesn't have to be evenly applied, but you don't want to always place all of your cash on one bet and one bet only.

Check ATS Standings - ATS standings are standings that are not just wins and losses, but they are the standings that measure how teams have fared 'Against The Spread' in all their games. This is a very important record to know for bettors who like to place wagers down on the point spread. A team's straight up record could look a lot different than their record against the spread on the season. A team that has performed very well or even very poorly can be a team that you might want to jump in on some action with to see how it hits. These ATS standings are not definite indicators of an upcoming matchup, but they certainly can be very helpful.

Don't Forget About Props! - A lot of bettors get caught up in game lines. They bet on the point spreads, over/under totals, and the moneyline wagers. But let's not forget that there are a ton of great prop odds out there to be taken advantage of. And the nice thing about these prop odds, is that they can be based on very small outcomes within a game. This limits the things that can take away from a game line wager. Prop bets can be some of the most fun wagers to make on the NBA as well, and can cover player performances as well as a ton of team performances as well.

Make Sure You Keep Track Of Injuries – Injuries can be game and matchup defining, and if you aren’t paying attention to the injuries of the players that are on the teams you are betting on, you are liable to make some errors in judgment when you just look at the lines and don’t understand the reasons behind them. The NBA is the most player-driven league on the planet, and injuries to superstars, or even roleplayers, can greatly affect the odds.

NBA Betting Trends - Recognize Tendencies To Win More Wagers

When you get into betting on the NBA, you should become very familiar with the term 'trends'. Betting trends can be your best friend when it comes to wagering, on any sport for that matter. Trends are essentially indicators of what might happen, or key variables to consider when looking at a particular matchup. In other words, a trend that you view will be information that can be used to help you make your decision.

For example, you can look at a team's record in a head to head matchup to see how they have performed in the past. However, make sure to take into account that things change very quickly in the NBA, and the teams that played previously might not be the teams that are currently playing. Another trend to note is form. NBA bettors would be wise to identify hot streaks and take them into account, whether that be expecting them to continue or predicting regression to the mean. The NBA is a game of streaks, and betting on it is no different.

NBA Betting Strategies + Systems

Every bettor wants to find the perfect betting strategy that is a guaranteed winner. We would too. Unfortunately, there isn't one, but there are certainly some strategies for betting on the NBA that you can try to see if they work. Many bettors might have their own unique strategy that they have come up with through betting in their own experiences. That is great too.

Examples of a betting strategy might be picking big underdogs. A bettor might have a number in mind that they will take to receive points, no matter which teams are playing. Some bettors like to receive points more than give them. This is certainly a type of strategy that can be done.

As far as coming up with a strategy that works for you, there are a couple of things that you need to consider. You will need to make sure that this strategy conforms to the budget that you are working with. Are you are $10 a game bettor? $100? $200? Whatever you are, it's important to stick within your means, and formulate a strategy from there.

Second, you need to avoid bias. We know, we know, that's hard to do. Everyone will have their favorite team. But it's important to bet with your brain, and not your heart. This will lead to more bets being won in the long run.

NBA Statistics

The NBA is played over 82 games, which is enough time to get a sense of what teams are. Statistics simply measure that in mathematical terms. NBA statistics is a pretty vague term and can mean anything from the traditional points/rebounds/assists method of comparing players to advanced statistics like effective field goal percentage and true shooting percentage. It can even mean keeping track of the referees!

NBA Offensive Statistics

There are a lot of different ways to measure NBA offensive statistics. For the purposes of this section, we’ll go over the basic statistics and some advanced statistics as well, as there are a couple good ones worth knowing.

Traditional (Counting) statistics are things like points, rebounds, assists, blocks, steals – the stats that are recorded in the box score. However, one thing that we have learned over the years is that some people are able to put up big numbers and never win anything. Advanced statistics are meant to be a more accurate measure of the quality of a player.

Offensive Rating – Offensive rating takes the average of a team or player’s performance over a hypothetical 100 possession sample size. As the average NBA game has around 100 possessions in it, the offensive rating is basically a measurement of the quality of an offense over the course of a game, in an easy to digest format. Think of offensive rating like a normalized version of points scored per game – when you look at points scored per game, it takes into account the pace of play, which can inflate or deflate stats. Offensive rating removes this variable, and so gives us a better view of which teams are good at scoring, not simply which teams play the fastest.

Free Throw % - This one is really easy, it’s not an advanced statistic at all, but it’s an important one in the context of betting. This is just the percentage of free throws awarded that are made by a team. The reason this is important to betting is that free throws tend to be defining moments in close games – and teams that can’t make them might lose, or blow a cover.

Pace Of Play – This is a measurement of how many possessions occur during an average game for a team. Teams play at certain speeds; some of them slow down the possessions and try to dictate the terms of the game to the opponent with overpowering post play, and some of them speed up the pace and shoot the first open three-point shot that is available. The pace of play is important to understanding bets like over/unders, where the bet is on the total amount scored in the game. More possessions per game mean more chances to score.

NBA Defensive Statistics

Just like offensive statistics, there are a ton of really interesting and valuable ways to measure defensive output in the NBA. The traditional defensive counting statistics are rebounds, steals and blocks, but defense obviously goes way beyond that – it encompasses shot pressuring, ability to not get exploited, forcing bad shots, and all sorts of other things. This is why we have advanced analytics – it’s to tell us that despite his better box score numbers, Hassan Whiteside is actually a dramatically worse defender than Rudy Gobert. Understanding defensive statistics is crucial to understanding the NBA, and even more crucial to understanding NBA betting.

Defensive Rating – Defensive rating, often abbreviated as DRTG, is a measurement of the efficiency of a defense, in terms of points allowed per 100 possessions. There are about 100 possessions in the average NBA game, and so this metric allows you to observe what the defense is performing like when factors like pace are removed from the equation.

Opponent Field Goal Percentage - This is simply a measure of how well opponents shoot against the team in question. A lot of NBA defenses are built to pressure certain shots, and allow certain other ones that are lower quality, and so you can look at this statistic to understand how good a team is at allowing good shots. One thing to keep in mind, however, is that three-pointers are worth more than two-pointers, and this stat doesn’t account for that, nor does it account for free throws.

NBA Referee Statistics

One final area of interest to a sports bettor is the referees who are overseeing the game. Referee conspiracies abound in the NBA, and the world of sports betting, while not veering into that, does understand the important role that the officials play in the game, as far as outcomes are concerned. After all, when a single free throw or foul call can decide a game, the person making that decision is incredibly important. The information is quite useful and very specialized, as certain NBA refs call the game a certain way consistently.

Final Advice For Betting On The NBA

We have given you quite a bit to think about on this page. Whether it's which online sportsbook to consider for betting on the NBA, what options, tip, or strategies, it's all important. But to sum up what we've talked about, and try to hone in on the most important points, we want to leave you with a bit of NBA betting advice.

Before you go place a wager at one of these sportsbooks, you need to do your research on the teams and betting lines that you choose to wager. Not every sportsbook if created equal and some sites will value a certain team more than others. By shopping lines across a few betting outlets, you will find that the moneyline odds, total points, and even spread can be drastically different. Taking advantage of these discrepancies is paramount if you want to make money over time.
