Connecticut Sportsbooks + Sports Betting Sites
Connecticut has yet to regulate sports betting in its legislation as it failed to do so during any 2020 legislative session. This could be the year that regulated betting launches, however, as the state already legalized sports betting following the repeal of PASPA in 2018. The only thing the Constitution State is waiting on is the final regulation to be set and following this, land-based and possible mobile sports betting could launch later in the year. Connecticut is on the borders of New York as well as Rhode Island who both have their own sports betting markets. Many local bettors cross state lines to bet on sports in those states. Connecticut may be motivated to retain that revenue following the 2020 COVID-19 shutdowns. Therefore, local bettors may see domestic sportsbooks launch in Connecticut sooner rather than later.
Local bettors do not have to wait, however, as international sportsbooks are available to all Connecticut bettors. These online sports betting operators offer some of the best betting lines available and are accessible to all Connecticut bettors. These sportsbooks are able to operate regardless of the state’s regulations as they are located overseas and are unaffected by US law. Sports bettors in Connecticut already use international betting sites as they are the only way to legally bet on sports as of right now. While local and tourist sports bettors await the next legislative session, online sportsbooks legally provide action for all Connecticut players.

Is it Legal to Bet on Sports in Connecticut?
Betting on sports is a legalized but still unregulated gambling activity in Connecticut, and it is dangerous and financially unsound for individual bettors to deal with unlicensed live bookies in the state. Residents must understand that their state has not yet licensed or authorized any individual or company to run live or online bookie businesses in its jurisdiction. You can find the existing CT gambling laws at the official Connecticut General Assembly website here (Section 53-278a et seq.).
Since there are no licensed sports betting options in Connecticut just yet, bettors mostly turn to offshore online sportsbooks accepting Connecticut residents in large numbers. The state has no offshore sports betting laws which prohibit residents from signing up at these online sportsbooks. Residents can therefore legally bet on sports at all of the top-rated offshore online bookies we have listed here.

Will Connecticut Get Legal Sports Betting In 2021?
Connecticut is closer than ever before to getting legalized sports betting in the upcoming 2021 session. In 2020, they were discussing the topic in length prior to the outbreak of COVID-19. After that, not much else was said or done on the issue. There was opposition in 2020 because Governor Ned Lamont did not want a Tribal only industry and he was also not accepting of mobile or online sportsbooks becoming legal.
However, since the Coronavirus Pandemic, Governor Lamont and his administration are drawing up proposals to legalize sports betting in the Nutmeg State for Tribal sportsbooks only with the inclusion of internet and mobile sportsbook platforms. The Governor is welcoming all sources of new revenue streams like that of sports wagering and has said as such that Connecticut needs to get in line with the modernizations of neighboring states and join to the 21st century when it comes to gambling on sporting events. This makes 2021 as good a year as any to legalize the sports betting industry in Connecticut and get it up and running.
Will Connecticut Residents Get into Trouble for Placing Bets Online?
You will not get into trouble for placing bets on sports at the many available online sportsbooks in Connecticut. Since Connecticut has no online sports betting licenses available to the various gambling operators in CT to date, it cannot use non-existent laws to prosecute its residents for betting online. In fact, Connecticut has never cited, fined, arrested, or jailed any of its residents for betting on sports at any of the online sportsbooks. Since Connecticut-friendly offshore online bookies are not even based in Connecticut, the state has absolutely no power over them.
However, you could very well get into trouble if you deal with an unlicensed live bookie operating in Connecticut. The state will also prosecute you if you try running a live or online bookmaking business in the state. In order to bet legally on your favorite sports events, your only safe avenue is to register at the legal online sportsbooks we recommend. Let’s take a look at some of your options!

Connecticut Sports Betting Laws
Connecticut actually passed a law legalizing sports betting in the state back in 2017, pending the overturn of PASPA. However, this law – HB 6948 (signed into law as Public Act No. 17-209) – merely made sports betting in the state legal from a state perspective, but it requires the congressional passage of additional regulatory and tax frameworks before sports betting can actually go live for CT bettors. These considerations – in the form of SB 17 and SB 665 – are currently being debated in the CT legislature, with the former picking up steam in the Senate.
Unfortunately, the proceedings are proving contentious, as the new legislation – if approved – would fundamentally alter Connecticut’s longstanding tribal compacts with the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe (operator of the Foxwoods Resort Casino) and the Mohegan Tribe (operator of the Mohegan Sun). These tribes are threatening to tear up their compacts and memorandums of understanding that currently govern their casino businesses, and this would cause an immediate minimum annual shortfall of $160 million in profit-sharing payments to the CT government. It is too early to tell how the bills in question will fare before the full Senate or House, but it may be some time before this issue is cleared up to any party’s satisfaction.
Notwithstanding the above, there are a pair of remaining federal laws that Connecticut residents should be aware of if they wish to wager on sports in the state. The Wire Act of 1961 is an anti-gambling law passed ages ago as a protective measure against mafia-related sports betting activity, and it prevents US-based bookmakers from accepting sports bets across state lines. This, for example, is why CT residents cannot simply call up a Nevada casino and place a sports bet, as such violates the interstate wire restrictions of the law. The other law, the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 (UIGEA) seeks to prevent US-based financial institutions from processing gambling-related deposits or payouts. However, neither law has any jurisdiction over offshore CT sportsbooks, nor do they prevent or prohibit CT residents from legally using online offshore sportsbooks.
As a reminder: The top Connecticut sports wagering sites are located in other countries and therefore are not subject to state or federal law. These sites are regulated by the laws of their own home countries. So to sum up, as long as they are not regulated by Connecticut authorities and are not located inside the United States, online sportsbooks are perfect sports betting options for Connecticut bettors, and they’ll continue to be so for the foreseeable future.

Are Online Sportsbooks Accepting Connecticut Residents Regulated?
Connecticut does not license and regulate any online sportsbooks. This is simply because Connecticut has not passed any bill that actively licenses sports betting activities inside the state. The major online sportsbooks that operate within the state of Connecticut and accept players from Connecticut are operated in foreign countries. The state does not have the ability to regulate them due to this. While the online sportsbooks are not licensed and regulated by the state of Connecticut, the offshore online bookies that accept Connecticut residents are safe and legal. This is because they have been issued online sports betting licenses by regulatory bodies in foreign countries where betting on sports is a legalized and regulated activity. Moreover, the offshore online bookies we recommend belong to reputed companies that will never dream of cheating their valued customers.
The Potential For Sports Gambling Revenue In Connecticut
Connecticut has a number of professional and amateur sports teams in and around the state, and once the state formally rolls out legalized sports betting, it could generate a lot of revenue and keep a tremendous amount of the estimated $8 billion that CT residents wager on sports each year inside the local economy. But as of now, CT bettors can only place bets on offshore online sportsbooks.
Connecticut’s major professional team is the Connecticut Sun of the WNBA, who play at the Mohegan Sun, one of the finest casinos in the world (and who should be receiving one of the state’s first sports betting licenses in the near future, regardless of other issues raised with CT’s legislative approach). The state also has a huge UConn following, and plenty of Ravens fans, Nationals fans, and Patriots fans call the Constitution State home, as well. Connecticut bettors are also fond of auto racing, ski jumping, and golf, just to name a few.
Connecticut Online Sports Betting FAQs
How Do I Deposit?
Making a deposit at an USA online sportsbook isn’t nearly as complicated as you might think. It’s basically like buying something from Amazon. If you’re using a credit card or debit card, all you have to do is enter the number into the cashier page, select the amount you want to deposit, and it’ll be processed exactly the same way as it would when purchasing something from an online retailer. This method also works for prepaid cards, which some people might prefer to using their credit/debit cards. Prepaid cards can be purchased at most stores or banks. Make sure they are able to make online, overseas purchases before attempting to use them, of course, as not all prepaid cards are certified for use in foreign commerce.
If you prefer to use checks or money orders, you can do so easily. This method takes longer to credit your account, though. Once you’ve gotten your money order or written your check, send it to your sportsbook (whose address can be found on the “About” page or by request) using a courier service like FedEx. Send the tracking number to the sportsbook and you’re all set. Funds will be credited to your account upon receipt.
Sportsbooks also accept wire transfers from banks or through peer-to-peer (or person-to-person) platforms. This allows for funds to be sent directly from a connected account to your sportsbook of choice. Another popular method for deposit is Bitcoin, which is a digital currency. This is the fastest way to fund your account and is very simple to use. All you do is transfer the funds from your Bitcoin wallet to your sportsbook account, and the book takes care of everything else.
Is It Safe To Bet Online?
Betting online is absolutely the safest way to wager on sports if you live in Connecticut. Online sportsbooks are held to extremely strict security standards by the authorities that license and regulate them. They are also watched by online groups like the OSGA (Off Shore Gaming Association) and SBR (Sportsbook Review), both of whom report on the activities of online, offshore gambling sites so that everyone can see everything they do.
In addition to being watched like a hawk and having the best security measures around, online sports betting sites much safer than using local bookies who only deal in cash and are operating illegally within the state. Online, offshore sportsbooks are legal for Connecticut residents to use because they fall outside of the purview of state and federal law.
How Can I Tell I Have A Gambling Problem?
While sports betting can be a fun pastime for many, for some, it can be an addictive vice. But how can you tell if you have a problem? Many gamblers have trouble identifying when their gambling has become a problem. If at any time while you are betting on sports you have felt like you could not stop, have bet with money that was set aside for something else, or have felt the need to hide your gambling from others, you might have a problem.
If any of that sounds familiar, don’t be afraid to reach out. There are plenty of resources readily available to help you through this. Calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700, contacting 1-800-GAMBLER, or going to a local Gambler’s Anonymous meeting can help tremendously. Compulsive gambling is not a choice, but getting help is. Don’t let problem gambling take over your life.
Will The New Sports Betting Laws In Connecticut Prohibit Me From Using Offshore Sites?
While bills have recently passed in the CT legislature and sports betting has been approved in the state, no laws were made that banned residents from continuing to use the same online offshore sportsbooks they have before the ruling. These sites are also unbound from any state law that CT could enact since they are located and regulated in countries outside the US.
What Is The Legal Age To Bet On Sports In Connecticut?
The answer to this question can be hard to discern, but it appears to us to be 21 years old. The original approval for sports betting in the state did not include a set age to indulge in the activity. However, right now, in order to gamble in CT casinos you will need to be over the age of 21. This is the age other states have used when creating official regulations. Online sportsbooks that accept Connecticut residents do not have age restrictions beyond being older than 18, but if you are under the age of 21 in Connecticut and you bet on sports, you do run the risk of underage gambling which is a crime.
Will Land-based Sportsbooks Be Better Than Online Sportsbooks in Connecticut?
While land-based sportsbooks in CT will have the advantage of offering food, drinks, and TVs, online offshore sportsbooks will have the advantage with convenience, wagering types, and bonuses. There is also no telling as to whether or not those land-based sports wagering venues will offer a mobile betting app. This is something online users already have.
How Many Sports Wagering Sites Can I Use in CT?
As many as you want. Creating an account with an online offshore sportsbook is free to do and joining multiple sites will actually help when shopping lines. For example, if a UConn basketball game is coming up and the over/under looks better to you at one site than at another, you can roll with that option instead. However, you can only create one account per site.
Do Federal Sports Betting Laws Still Affect CT Sports Betting?
Now that Connecticut has approved sports betting in the state, federal laws do not necessarily carry the same weight. However, if you live in CT you still can’t use a mobile betting site that is offered in another state like New Jersey. If you did you’d be violating the Wire Act. In order to avoid this law, you will have to stick with online offshore options. Federal laws have no jurisdiction over the practices of these businesses and there have been no laws specifically banning CT residents from using them.
What Is A Moneyline Bet?
A moneyline bet is one of the easiest bets you can make. The basic idea is that the sportsbook will handicap various outcomes in a game, and provide them with odds. On the moneyline, odds are normalized to a $100 bet. Odds that start with a - mean that you have to bet that amount to receive $100, and odds that start with a + mean that you bet $100 in order to get paid out that amount.
