TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Four-time Pro Bowler Demaryius Thomas is now a New York Jet. The New England Patriots traded the nine-year veteran for a 2021 sixth-round pick on Tuesday.
The biggest factor in Thomas’ departure from New England was Antonio Brown’s arrival to the team. A wider receiver core that included Brown, Julian Edelman, Josh Gordon, Phillip Dorsett, and Thomas proved to be more than the Patriots needed.
While the Patriots may come to regret the decision in the long run based on the outcome of Antonio Brown’s latest troubles, the Jets are beaming about the acquisition.
Jets’ head coach Adam Gase appeared to be critical of his team after a week one 17-16 loss to the Buffalo Bills, most notably to his wide receivers. Thomas should be able to instantly improve the Jets’ wide receiving core and provide quarterback Sam Darnold with another reliable weapon on offense.
Being traded typically isn’t a welcomed transition for an NFL player, but given Thomas’ struggles over the past year, a fresh start with the Jets may be just what he needed.

Thomas tore his Achilles in week 16 of the 2018 season as a member of the Houston Texans. The Patriots signed him as a free agent in April but released him at the end of training camp only to sign him again days later in preparation for the regular season.
