Deshaun Watson To The Patriots? Odds For Pats QB In 2020, 2021

  • The Patriots did not resign Tom Brady in free agency this offseason, leaving the odds for the next starting quarterback for the New England Patriots open.
  • Jarrett Stidham is the favorite to be the Patriots starting quarterback for Week 1 of the 2020 and 2021 regular season.
  • New England also signed Brian Hoyer to compete for the starting quarterback position.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — The New England Patriots are going to be active players in the quarterback market for the first time in a long time. The Patriots officially ended an era this offseason when they allowed Tom Brady, who had been the face of the franchise for the past 20 seasons, to sign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

In the wake of letting go of the six-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady, the successor will have some big shoes to fill. While the NFL’s free agency period is well underway there are still some intriguing free agent options for the Patriots as they look for the next quarterback to lead the team.

The recent signing of journeyman quarterback Brian Hoyer could signal that there will be an open competition.

Online sportsbooks have posted two sets of prop bets addressing the Patriots starting quarterback for the start of the season. But, the odds for the 2020 season vary from the 2021 season.

Patriots QB Week 1 2020 Regular Season Odds

With Tom Brady headed to Tampa, for the first time in two decades a different quarterback will be taking snaps for the Patriots. NFL betting sites list 2019 fourth round pick Jarrett Stidham as the favorite to be named the Week 1 starter for the New England Patriots with -130 odds.

Behind Stidham on the odds board is Brian Hoyer at +400 odds. Stidham beat Hoyer last year for the backup spot last season which led to the release of Hoyer. Now Hoyer will have a chance to battle for the starting spot.

Three long shot quarterbacks that may have a chance at being signed by the Patriots while also being tied at +800 odds are Andy Dalton, Cam Newton, and Jameis Winston. Andy Dalton and Cam Newton will have to be traded for while Jameis Winston is the only one that’s an unrestricted free agent.

Stidham seems to have the inside track on the starting job for the Patriots so if you wanted to roll the dice, doing so on Brian Hoyer’s +400 odds or on Winston’s +800 odds would make sense since he is the only quarterback with those odds that’s an unrestricted free agent.

Either way, these odds reflect the Patriots not drafting a quarterback this offseason and finding a plug and play guy under center.

Winner: Stidham (-130)

Patriots Starting QB In Week 1 Of 2021 Regular Season Odds

The odds for the Patriots starting quarterback going into the 2021 season is one of the biggest wildcards to bet on. This will be the season where the Patriots look to draft or trade for the quarterback of the future. Jarrett Stidham is still the favorite to be the starter with +350 odds.

Surprisingly, Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson is close behind him on the odds board with +450 odds as his exit out of Houston seems more and more likely. Clemson Tigers quarterback Trevor Lawrence has +500 odds to get drafted by the Patriots and win the starting job.

At +700 odds Florida Gators quarterback Kyle Trask has the fourth shortest odds to win the starting job for the Patriots. Watson’s +450 odds are enticing but the best bet might either be on Trask (+700) or Lawrence (+500) who will be some of the top quarterbacks in the NFL draft.

Lawrence will likely be a top 10 draft pick by 2021, which means those betting on him to be the starter in 2021 will assume that the Patriots will tank on purpose or by accident to land him.
