Online sportsbooks have different odds on the different coaching vacancies for the different teams and odds on different coaches as well.

Starting with the Boston Celtics, this is easily one of the premier job openings that are available right now as the Celtics are the most storied franchise in NBA history and everyone who is interested would jump at the opportunity to take on the challenge.

Sitting with the favored NBA odds to land the Celtics coaching job are both Chauncey Billups and Sam Cassell.

Billups is their ideal candidate as he was one of the top point guards in the league at one point with a high basketball IQ. Billups actually was drafted to the Celtics back in the 1997 NBA Draft.

He has a loaded resume as a player which includes being on three All-NBA teams in his career and a Finals MVP in 2004 with the Detroit Pistons. With that, the Celtics organization would be happy to bring Billups to their sideline.

As for Sam Cassell, his time to step into a head coaching spot is well overdue as he has spent 12 seasons as an assistant coach in the league including stints with the Washington Wizards, Los Angeles Clippers, and currently in the playoffs with the Philadelphia 76ers.

Cassell has plenty of experience under his belt both as a coach and a former player in which he played his last season as a member of the Celtics. Like Billups, Cassell has been a member of All-NBA teams and All-Star teams as well.

Not to mention, he is a three-time NBA Champion as well. That being said, Cassell is definitely Boston material and lives up to those standards.

One name that has also been thrown around is the current Brooklyn Nets assistant coach, Ime Udoka. Udoka comes from the long list of Greg Popovich coaching prodigies and has certainly been one of the most impressive.

He served as a crucial part of the 76ers development process which has turned them into one of the league's elite defensive teams and is now gaining experience coaching a star-studded team in the Brooklyn Nets. Given his coaching experience and his mentors, bettors should be taking his odds seriously as he will be a head coach fairly soon.

Women Making History

One of the more interesting odds that are available right now is if there will be a female head coach hired before the 2021-2022 NBA season.

Female Head Coach Hired Before start 2021 Season

  • No -450
  • Yes +275

Bettors should not be so quick to take the favored odds here as more and more women have been hired in the NBA as assistant coaches. It is only a matter of time before a female gets hired as an NBA head coach and 2021-2022 might be that year.

When thinking about female coaches, bettors minds immediately shift to San Antonio Spurs assistant, Becky Hammon.

Hammon has been linked to many different coaching jobs and has odds to become the head coach of the Boston Celtics, Dallas Mavericks, Indiana Pacers, New Orleans Pelicans, Orlando Magic, Portland Trail Blazers, and Washington Wizards.

The one team to look out for that could break that barrier are the Dallas Mavericks who have recently entered the coaching search after the resignation of Rick Carlisle. Mark Cuban, the outspoken owner of the Mavs, is known for taking big risks and running things his way has this hire written all over him as he tends to think differently than most owners.

That alone should have bettors taking the long odds here.

Aside from Hammon, there are plenty of other female coaches that are more than qualified to take the step up.

Kara Lawson is a name to watch for as well as she is a former assistant coach for the Boston Celtics under now Celtics GM, Brad Stevens. Now though, she is the head coach of the Duke Blue Devils Women’s basketball team which is one of the most coveted jobs in the country.

With her experience and ties to the Celtics, she could be the one to cash bettors out.

Another name to look out for is Dawn Stanley, the current head coach of the South Carolina Gamecocks women’s team, and the coach of women’s Team USA.

The fact that she is the coach of Team USA alone should be enough to land her an NBA coaching job. Recently she has been linked as a top candidate for the Portland Trail Blazers head coaching job.

Rick Carlisle Coaching Carrousel

Just moments after resigning from the head coaching job with the Dallas Mavericks, NBA odds makers have immediately moved Carlisle to the top of those NBA coaching odds boards.

Carlisle currently has odds listed on the Boston Celtics, Indiana Pacers, New Orleans Pelicans, Orlando Magic, Portland Trail Blazers, and Washington Wizards odds boards.

Given his coaching experience, from being an NBA Champion and coaching greats such as Dirk Nowitzki, it is only a matter of time before Carlisle ends up with another team.
