TOKYO – Luka Doncic took the NBA by storm in his rookie season and has steadily progressed into one of the best basketball players in the world. His talent has led Slovenia to an undefeated group stage record and the team is expected to make it at least to the semifinals.

Who Is Luka Doncic?

Luka Doncic is a 22-year-old professional basketball player from Ljubljana, Slovenia. He currently plays for the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA after being selected No. 3 overall in the 2018 draft.

Doncic has already compiled two all-star appearances, two All-NBA first team honors and the Rookie of the Year award.

Prior to joining the NBA, Doncic was named EuroLeague MVP in his championship season. He was also named to the 2010-2020 EuroLeague All-Decade team. Now, Doncic finds himself leading the Slovenian Olympic team into the quarterfinal round against Germany.

Largely due to Doncic’s play, Slovenia now holds the second-shortest odds on online sportsbooks to win the gold medal, only behind the United States.

Tokyo 2021 - Men's Basketball

  • USA -250
  • Slovenia +300
  • France +700

In the final week July, Slovenia had odds of +1400, showing just how much sports betting sites have changed their minds since seeing Doncic’s ability to lead the team to success.

Doncic, who seems to be on pace to be the individual leading scorer in the 2020 Olympics, opened as the second option behind the United States’ Kevin Durant. He was not the favorite due to the possibility of Slovenia not making it too far in the tournament, but once again shows his ability to overcome the odds.

Tokyo Basketball – Individual Leading Scorer

  • Kevin Durant +300
  • Luka Doncic +450

The odds have since been pulled because the tournament is about halfway over, but Doncic is expected to build upon his lead against Germany - Slovenia’s quarterfinal opponent. Slovenia is favored by 15.5 points with -110 odds to cover, the largest spread of any quarterfinal matchup.

Doncic is no stranger to defying the odds and will be attempting to do so once again as Slovenia looks to upset the United States. The sportsbooks seem to suggest that they have closed the gap, but Team USA is still thought to be the dominant force.
