This upcoming NFL season, there are three QBs who are on the hot seat and will have to prove themselves more than ever to keep their starting role.
Andy Dalton – Cincinnati Bengals
Dalton comes into this ninth season leading the Bengals behind center. His durability had been proven before this season (having only missed 3 games of 112 games) but sat out of 5 games this year due to a torn ligament in his thumb.
The Red Rifle has only thrown for over 4,000 yards in a season twice in his career and has only thrown more than 25 touchdowns in a season twice as well. With a QB rating and completion percentage that has dropped three of the last four seasons, Dalton has proved to be just average.
The Bengals finally pulled the bandaid off, firing coach Marvin Lewis last year and Dalton is likely the next to fall. The team has only won 18 games over the past three seasons with Dalton starting, and in an AFC North Division that is open to anyone, failing to meet expectations is unacceptable.
Dalton was the ninth highest paid player in the league last year in terms of base salary, earning $13.7 million. He is under contract for 2019 and 2020, set to earn $16 million and $17.5 million, respectively, but could be on the way out after this year if the Bengals are ready to move in a different direction.
Jameis Winston – Tampa Bay Buccaneers
“Famous Jameis” is still on his rookie contract, but his time with the Bucs may be over after this year. On his last year, set to make almost $21 million in base pay, Winston comes into 2019 without the question of Ryan Fitzpatrick taking his starting role.

Still, off-the-field issues continue to plague the former-Heisman winner, who can’t seem to stay out of the spotlight. Derek Carr – Oakland Raiders
When Jon Gruden came into town, no athlete was safe – no matter how much of a quality player they were. Evidence was shown in figurehead dealing Khalil Mack to the Bears early last year and the focus on the QB is next.
Carr did enough to silence the critics last year, throwing for a career-best 4,049 yards on a career-best 68.9% completion percentage. However, his 19 touchdowns came in as a career-worst and took way too many hits, being sacked 51 times last year. However, these stats are moot as Carr has been given his best-ever target in Antonio Brown and will have no excuses to improve moving forward.
Carr has led the Raiders to a losing record in four of his first five seasons but is under contract until 2022. USAOnlineSportsbooks.com would not be surprised to see a trade happen if Carr does not prove his abilities this season, or before/during the NFL draft next year.
