The top team in the league according to the online sportsbooks is the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, with the British Columbia Lions and the Calgary Stampeders as the only other teams with odds under +500 to win the 109th Grey Cup.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers, +160, 9-1 Record

The Blue Bombers have already played ten of their scheduled 18 games in the season, and they’ve come out on top in nine of them.

They have a two game lead over the British Columbia Lions in the West Division, although that is because the Lions have played two less games – both teams are tied in the loss column with 1.

Their only loss is an overtime loss to the Montreal Alouettes – and when they did face off against the Lions, they won handily, dominating the game to the tune of a 43-22 victory.

British Columbia Lions, +250, 7-1 Record

The Lions may have two less wins than the Blue Bombers, and they may have lost their head to head matchup against them, but they’re still a significant threat to win the Grey Cup.

Being tied in the loss column with the division leader and Grey Cup favorite is one thing, but the Lions have scored more points (295) in their eight games than the Blue Bombers have in their ten (267).

The Lions are the top team in the entire CFL in terms of points scored, and they’ve played only eight games, whereas much of the rest of the league has played nine or ten already.

Of course, the Lions (175) have also given up nearly as many points as the Blue Bombers (182), even though they’ve played two less games.

Calgary Stampeders, +475, 5-3 Record

While the Lions and the Blue Bombers are clearly the top two teams in the CFL, the Calgary Stampeders are also a genuine threat.

The Stampeders are currently third in the West Division, which would not normally equate to being third on the overall odds boards, but the East is so dire that the Stampeders – even in third place in the West – have a better record than any team in the East.

The Stampeders have scored 246 points and allowed 192, meaning they’re pretty clearly a tier below the Lions in terms of offense, and the Blue Bombers in terms of defense, but they’re still sitting with a +54 point differential through eight games.

They deserve their placement on the odds boards as the third-favorite, but for now, they look a bit like an also-ran compared to the juggernauts in BC and Winnipeg.
