Could Online Sports Betting in Michigan Come Sooner Than Later?

  • The Michigan Gaming Control Board originally estimated that online sports betting in Michigan wouldn’t come until 2021, but is now hopeful they can get it done in 2020.
  • The state has begun accepting gaming supplier licensing forms that could bring online sports betting to the state ahead of schedule.

LANSING, Mich. – Sports betting regulators have now indicated that online sports betting in Michigan could come sooner rather than later. The launch was originally estimated to occur in 2021 but now has a chance to launch in 2020.

As of last week, the Michigan Gaming and Control Board (MGCB) has begun accepting online gaming supplier licensing forms.

By accepting these forms, Michigan politicians are laying the groundwork for online betting to become a reality once live sports fully return to action.

"We've taken another step toward the launch of online gaming by beginning the licensing process," said Richard S. Kalm, MGCB executive director. "The MGCB encourages suppliers to file applications soon so we can conduct investigations and issue provisional licenses, which are allowed under state law."

Once these forms are sent in to be reviewed, other forms will be added to the website in order to begin the process with Michigan’s commercial casinos and the 12 Native American tribes that run casinos in the state.

All this is great news for Michigan residents who are enjoying the benefits of sports betting after the state legalized the practice in December of 2019.

The first sports bets were placed in retail locations back in March, although Michigan sports betting was suspended when the casinos were forced to close due to COVID-19 precautions.

Online sports betting is another beast, one that requires additional legislation and oversight for many states looking to capitalize on the most popular form of betting.

Since there was known legislation for brick-and-mortar betting facilities, that process was slightly smoother in actualizing. In the case of online betting, there is no prior text on this new form of gambling, so officials are forced to draft new rules and regulations.

While major brands like FanDuel and DraftKings have seen success in states like New Jersey, other states are still finding their way in the online betting market.

With the new developments, it will only be a matter of time before Michigan residents can get in on the action. U.S. online sportsbooks like DraftKings and FanDuel now have a chance to launch in November or December of 2020 at the earliest.
