Early 2021 Heisman Odds Favor Oklahoma’s Spencer Rattler

  • Spencer Rattler of Oklahoma has +300 odds to win the 2021 Heisman Trophy.
  • Bryce Young of Alabama has +550 odds to win the Heisman Trophy.
  • Alabama WR DeVonta Smith won the 2020 Heisman Trophy.

LAS VEGAS - DeVonta Smith wrapped up the Heisman Trophy on Tuesday, which means that betting on this edition of the Heisman closed at that time.

However, degenerate gamblers, fear not! There are already early odds on the 2021 Heisman Trophy, and this could be a great time to get in on some longshots before they blow up.

After all, DeVonta Smith, Kyle Trask and Mac Jones were all quite far from the top of the Heisman conversation at this point last year.

Despite DeVonta winning the award as a WR, the odds list looks quite QB-centric.

2021 Heisman Winner Odds

  • Spencer Rattler - OK +300
  • Bryce Young - Alabama +550
  • D.J. Uiagalelei - Clemson +800
  • JT Daniels - Georgia +800
  • Sam Howell - UNC +800
  • D'Eriq King - Miami +1400
  • Kedon Slovis - USC +1800
  • Kellen Mond - Texas A&M +2000

The top candidates at this point are Spencer Rattler of Oklahoma and Bryce Young of Alabama, followed by Clemson’s D.J. Uiagalelei, Georgia’s JT Daniles and UNC’s Sam Howell.

Spencer Rattler, Oklahoma, +300

Betting on an Oklahoma QB to win the Heisman Trophy hasn’t exactly been a terrible play, with two of the last four Heisman winners being Oklahoma QBs, with another Oklahoma QB making the top four in addition to that.

Rattler took the starting job over Tanner Mordecai in his redshirt freshman season, and racked up 3,031 yards and 28 touchdowns over 11 starts.

With numbers like that at this stage of his career, and Lincoln Riley calling the plays on offense, it’s not hard to see why Rattler sits at the top of the odds boards. However, if Riley makes a case as an NFL head coach, this program could see a regression.

Bryce Young, Alabama, +550

Interestingly, Bryce Young seems to be benefitting a lot in terms of odds from the ascension of Mac Jones as a Heisman candidate.

Many seemed to think that Alabama would revert to an older style of offense without Tua Tagovailoa under center, but they did anything but.

Jones went from practice squad QB and sorority flag football coach to Heisman candidate partially on the strength of his talent, but also on the talent of those around him, and the aggressive playcalling of the Alabama offense.

Young is, of course, a five star recruit, and seems to be getting similar deference as Rattler - potentially elite quarterback in what seems to be a very aggressive, high scoring system.

D.J. Uiagalelei, Clemson, +800

D.J. Uiagalelei performed admirably against Notre Dame, filling in for Trevor Lawrence at quarterback.

However, it must be noted that they (obviously) lost that game against Notre Dame, and when Lawrence was under center, they dominated that same team. Now, obviously it can’t be expected that Uiagalelei be equal to the most hyped quarterback prospect in the nation, especially as a freshman.

All told, he was quite good in the game, and showed a lot of talent and heart while leading his team.

Honestly, he might be underrated at these odds - he’s an elite talent in an elite system playing in a bad conference. That’s a recipe for great numbers.

JT Daniels, Georgia, +800

JT Daniels took over the starting job for Georgia just a bit too late, as they had already taken losses that put them out of contention for the Playoff.

Daniels was good, however, and a Georgia team with functional QB play is always dangerous.

The problem is that Daniels will likely have to lead his team to at least the SEC Championship Game to get serious consideration, and maybe more than that.

The SEC is a tough conference, and although the SEC East is a bit easier than the SEC West (mostly because Alabama isn’t in it), it’s still a big ask.

Sam Howell, UNC, +800

Sam Howell is one of the more talented quarterbacks in college football, full stop. He’s entering his Junior season having been the starting QB for the Tar Heels for two years already.

In 2020, he put up over 3500 passing yards, 30 touchdowns, and had a passer rating of 179.1. He’s likely going to improve on those numbers in his Junior year, with NFL scouts looking at him.

The problem for Howell is his team - how good will UNC be in 2021?

They could perform well, and maybe make the ACC Championship Game, which could be enough for Howell to be a serious contender.

Overall, his candidacy is a bit stronger than someone like Daniels, who has similar team quality problems but without a history of high level performances.

The 2021 Heisman Trophy betting season just kicked off, and already there are so many interesting storylines to follow.
