Myles Garrett Becomes New Leader Over Aaron Donald In DPOY Odds

  • Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett is the new favorite to win the 2020 NFL Defensive Player of the Year Award at +250 odds.
  • Garrett passes the Los Angeles Rams’ Aaron Donald, who currently sits at +265 odds to win.
  • Other big names in the hunt include TJ Watt (+300) for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Khalil Mack (+550) of the Chicago Bears.

CLEVELAND – The race for the 2020 NFL Defensive Player Of The Year has a new leader according to the oddsmakers.

Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett took over the top spot in terms of odds to win the award following a destructive month of October.

Garrett earned AFC Defensive Player of the Month honors for October and was able to just edge out Aaron Donald on the odds available at the major online sportsbooks.

2020-2021 AP NFL Defensive Player Of The Year - Winner

  • Myles Garrett +250
  • Aaron Donald +265
  • TJ Watt +300
  • Khalil Mack +550
  • Za'Darius Smith +2500
  • Joey Bosa +3300
  • Minkah Fitzpatrick +3300
  • J.J. Watt +4000
  • Bobby Wagner +5000
  • Darius Leonard +5000
  • Jadeveon Clowney +5000
  • Jalen Ramsey +5000

Bettors looking to wager on DPOY will see that the oddsmakers believe there are four players with a realistic shot to win the award: Garrett, Donald, TJ Watt, and Khalil Mack. While there is still plenty of time for a winner to emerge, no other players currently hold odds better than +2500.

Myles Garrett, Cleveland Browns +250

Garrett was able to pass Aaron Donald on the oddsboard thanks to his production rushing the passer.

Garrett earned his D player of the month award by racking up six sacks, two forced fumbles, 14 tackles, and two-strip sacks in October alone. His six sacks in October put him at nine on the year, which is the most of any player in the NFL this year.

Garrett also has a sack in six straight games, good for the longest streak in the league. If Garrett can play the rest of the schedule at anywhere near the level he was at in October, he will likely win the award with little controversy.

Aaron Donald, Los Angeles Rams +265

Big number 99 for the Rams has been harassing quarterbacks for years and has continued his production so far in 2020.

Through seven played games this season, Donald has collected eight sacks, 22 tackles (12 solo, 10 assisted), and 15 QB hits all out of the defensive tackle slot.

Donald’s Rams are looking to get back to the Super Bowl after a disappointing 2019 campaign. If Donald is able to get some key big plays that help his team win down the stretch, he could end up receiving his third DPOY award of his career.

TJ Watt, Pittsburgh Steelers +300

While TJ Watt doesn’t have the stats of Garrett or Donald, he is the best player on an undefeated Pittsburgh Steelers’ defense that has handled every challenge they have faced so far in 2020.

Watt has 5.5 sacks on the season to go along with 20 tackles, three passes defended, and one interception.

If the Steelers are able to continue their dominance throughout the season, Watt could continue to generate DPOY buzz. Still, he would need to put up some bigger numbers if he wants to become a three-time winner of the award like his brother JJ Watt.

Khalil Mack, Chicago Bears +550

Khalil Mack won the 2016 Defensive Player of the Year award and currently sits with the fourth-shortest odds to win in 2020.
So far this year, Mack has 25 tackles, 5.5 sacks, and a fumble recovery.

In order for Mack to earn the trust of NFL bettors to win the award this year, he will need to seriously increase his production down the stretch.
