Nate Diaz Massive Underdog In Final Fight Of His Contract

  • Khamzat Chimaev and Nate Diaz will fight at UFC 279.
  • Chimaev opened as a -1100 favorite, and has ballooned to a -1600 favorite.
  • This makes Diaz a greater underdog than Julianna Pena vs. Amanda Nunes, the greatest upset in UFC history.

LAS VEGAS – Nate Diaz, entering the final fight of his UFC contract, is set to face off against Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 279.

Khamzat Chimaev Vs Nate Diaz Odds

  • Khamzat Chimaev -1600
  • Nate Diaz +800

Chimaev, fresh off of a hard-fought victory against Gilbert Burns, has been tipped by many as the next in line for Kamaru Usman’s championship, but a fight against Diaz could make him a star.

The fight lines opened with Chimaev as a -1100 favorite, but they’ve since ballooned even further.

With all due respect to the great career of Nate Diaz, it’s almost impossible to picture him beating Chimaev.

Diaz is coming off of a decision loss to Leon Edwards, although he did famously rattle Edwards in the fifth round. His last fight before the Edwards matchup was a BMF Belt matchup against Jorge Masvidal, which he lost in 2019.

Chimaev, meanwhile, is undefeated in his MMA career, with wins over Gilbert Burns, Li Jiangling and Gerald Meerschaert burnishing his resume.

Perhaps more impressive than his wins is his manner of victory. With the exception of the Burns fight, Chimaev has never gone to a decision, winning his other 10 professional MMA fights by finish.

Sportsbooks have not yet posted specific finish odds, but when they do, expect Chimaev by KO and Chimaev by Submission to be very expensive bets to place, perhaps even an outright favorite.

The question at this point is whether the odds balloon even more in Chimaev’s favor.

The upset of Amanda Nunes by Julianna Pena was considered the greatest upset in UFC history, and that was with Nunes as a -1200 favorite. Chimaev has blown by that number – if Diaz wins this fight to finish off his UFC career, it will be the greatest upset in UFC history.
