  • Mike McCarthy has +600 odds to be fired first.
  • Matt Nagy’s odds to be the first coach fired this season are set at +750.

LAS VEGAS—Heading into the 2021-2022 NFL season, there are a few head coaches that are considered to be on thin ice and even on the verge of being out of a job. This could be due to consecutive losing records or the underperforming of their teams last year.

Online betting sites currently have odds up asking which NFL head coach is going to get canned first and the three names to make the top of that list are Vic Fangio, Mike McCarthy, and Matt Nagy.

First Head Coach To Be Fired

  • Vic Fangio +500
  • Mike McCarthy +600
  • Kliff Kingsbury +750
  • Matt Nagy +750
  • Zac Taylor +850
  • Mike Zimmer +900
  • Jon Gruden +1200
  • David Culley +1800
  • Mike Vrabel +2000
  • Matt Rhule +2200

Vic Fangio, Denver Broncos

There were high hopes for the Denver Broncos going into the season being that many thought they were going to land Aaron Rodgers. Now with Rodgers remaining with the Green Bay Packers, the quarterback situation for the Broncos has not been its best. It's a continuing problem that led to them finishing their last two seasons with a below .500 record.

The quarterback issue and how Fangio is handling it is disappointing. Especially with the regular season just under one month away and no clear direction on who is going to start under center. The problem is becoming even more complicated with Fangio naming both Drew Lock and Teddy Bridgewater as co-starters ahead of the preseason which means Lock will start the first game and Bridgewater start the second.

As things continue to head south for the Broncos, this should be a money-making opportunity on Fangio to be the first coach out of a job this NFL season.

Mike McCarthy, Dallas Cowboys

Mike McCarthy has had his fair share of golden days in which he was able to lead the Green Bay Packers to numerous playoff appearances, conference championships, and even a Super Bowl victory. However, it seems that his dominance has come to an end with his last three seasons as a head coach all coming in under .500.

Looking at how McCarthy did in his first season coaching the Dallas Cowboys, they finished with a 6-10 record. Granted, their starting QB Dak Prescott was injured early on in the season, but other factors outside of Dak brought them down further. The main one was their defense which was ranked the fifth-worst in the league in points allowed per game.

With a roster that includes what could be seen as a top 5 QB, a top 5 running back and a receiving core that is above average, this team should not be finishing below .500 and should run over their division. However, if they get off to the slow start they did last season, McCarthy’s NFL odds could cash quickly for sports bettors.

Matt Nagy, Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears seem to have lost that spark they once had back in 2018 when they had the top defense in the league. Now for the last two seasons, they have finished with an 8-8 record and have had major issues under center.

Nagy has moved on from Mitchell Trubisky and Nick Foles, now having both Andy Dalton and Justin Fields to choose from. There is a dilemma though as the Bears brought in Dalton through free agency and guaranteed him the starting job before trading up in the draft to acquire Fields.

Dalton is coming off of a terrible season that saw him finish with just over 2,100 passing yards, eight interceptions, and the 25th ranked QBR at 53.8. It is almost certain that in his first year with a new team that Dalton could find some bumps in the road, especially after he struggles last season.

It's a safe bet that if Dalton does struggle for the team, a majority of the blame will be on Nagy as this was his call and could lead to his firing this season.
