Return To Royal St. George

The course at Royal St. George’s is a classic Par 70 with a distance measured at 7,189 yards. Being England in July, blustery, wet conditions are to be expected throughout the weekend in Sandwich.

The course lasted hosted The Open in 2011, producing an unassuming winner in Darren Clarke. Before Clarke, Ben Curtis took home the Claret Jug in 2003, with Greg Norman capturing the championship in 1993.

Norman’s 13-under score in ‘93 was the only time the winner has shot better than 5-under at this course.

The Big Fish Across The Pond

The field is back to full strength this week and the stars are sitting atop the betting board once again.

Jon Rahm has a huge lead on the competition due to his momentum from the US Open as well as a great week in the Scottish Open where he was just a few shots off the lead.

While Rahm will likely be a contender this week, he has finished T44 or worse in three of his four appearances in this tournament. Those looking to back Rahm should hold off until he is available for a better price after the First or Second Round.

The group behind Rahm featuring all the big names has plenty of value to work with. Bettors can grab a few of Koepka, Thomas, Johnson, or DeChambeau and feel good about their ticket heading into Thursday.

Out of that group, none are playing better than Brooks Koepka. He has three top-fives in his last four tournaments, including the US Open and PGA Championship, while also placing in the top 10 in three of his last four Open Championship appearances.

His reputation of getting up off the couch to compete in major tournaments has rung true in 2021, and it would surprise no one to see him on the leaderboard for the final major of the year.

Brooks’ rival Bryson DeChambeau would love to perform his best this week but will find a bit of trouble bombing his way around this course. This is not a particularly long course, and it is one that loves to punish those who can’t find fairways like Bryson.

Instead, a bet on someone like Justin Thomas who is very accurate and just played well in Scotland is a better value for those looking to bet on golf.

The Best Of The Rest

In such a massive and unpredictable field at The Open, it is almost certain that the winner will come from the golfers listed with greater than +4000 betting odds on the sportsbooks.

Names like Lee Westwood at +4000 are extremely ripe for the taking this week at Royal St. George. Westwood has been experiencing a career resurgence that began at the start of this year in Florida.

While Westwood has colled off a bit, he would enjoy nothing more than to capture his country’s major championship to cap his career.

Patrick Reed is another interesting name at +4000. Reed is always sneaking around the leaderboard at major events and has the scrambling ability to make noise this week.

Further down the board names like Cam Smith at +6600, Webb Simpson at +8000, Corey Connors at +12500, and Brian Harman at +15000 are all of tremendous value.

All of those golfers have exceptional Strokes Gained: Tee-to-green stats, which will likely be the most valuable metric for a course with sticky rough and thick foliage.

The golfer that is able to avoid the big mistakes while being accurate will be the one left standing in Sandwich.
