Big 12 Conference Outlook: Oklahoma On Top Again

  • Oklahoma has -200 odds to win the conference for what would be the seventh season in a row.
  • The Sooners have +600 odds to win the national title, the fourth-shortest in the country.
  • Iowa State has the sixth-shortest odds for a national title but are +350 to win the conference.

NORMAN, Okla. – The Big 12 has long been dominated by the Oklahoma Sooners and with the news of the team leaving the conference in a couple of years, the reign is ending. However, for the time being, they are still favored in the Big 12.

Big 12 Conference Winner Odds

The Big 12 is slightly different from the rest of the Power 5 conference in that there are no divisions.

This means that instead of the division winners playing the conference championship, it’s the top two teams who will meet for the crown. Online sportsbooks give Oklahoma the sizable edge.

Big 12 Conference Winner 21/22

  • Oklahoma -200
  • Iowa State +350
  • Texas +550
  • Oklahoma State +1400
  • TCU +1600
  • West Virginia +3000
  • Baylor +5000
  • Kansas State +5000
  • Texas Tech +10000
  • Kansas +25000

If the betting odds are correct, it would mark the seventh straight year in which OU was named conference champions. Those betting on college football should be hesitant to bet against the Sooners, but if need be, the Iowa State Cyclones are likely the best option.

Iowa State will be returning 20 of their 22 starters from last season including their entire offense.

This means the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year (Breece Hall), Newcomer of The Year (Xavier Hutchinson), Defensive Player of the Year (Mike Rose) and Defensive Freshman of the Year (Isheem Young) are all back and ready to improve.

With eight returning All Big 12 first-team players, the Cyclones could pose a real threat.

The Texas Longhorns could potentially make a run at the conference championship, but it seems like it’s a race between Oklahoma and Iowa State for the 2021 season.

National Championship Contenders

The Sooners are the clear frontrunner in the conference to be in line to compete for a National Championship, but Iowa State, despite having much longer odds, is the next choice on the board.

Big 12 Team National Championship Odds

  • Oklahoma +600
  • Iowa State +2500
  • Texas +5000
  • Oklahoma State +12500
  • West Virginia +15000
  • Kansas State +25000
  • TCU +30000
  • Texas Tech +30000

Oklahoma is the only Big 12 team to make the College Football Playoff, doing so four times which is the most of any program aside from Clemson and Alabama. However, the team is winless in their four appearances.

Sports betting sites rightfully have Oklahoma as the fourth option since their road to the playoff is generally easier than other teams, but their noted struggles once reaching the playoff is worrisome.

With that said, OU has the Heisman favorite on their team in Spencer Rattler (+400) and he could potentially be the one to push the team over the edge.
