Legalization of Louisiana Sports Betting Set To Public Vote in November

  • LA SB 130 was signed to become law on Thursday in Louisiana.
  • The measure would allow residents to legalize sports wagering in their parishes.
  • The odds of the majority of Louisiana parishes approving sports betting is positive.

BATON ROUGE, La. - Parishes in Louisiana are on their way to having legalized sport betting options available.

Late last week, Governor John Edwards signed off on a referendum bill that will allow for the legalization of sports betting to be voted on in the 2020 ballot.

Senate Bill 130 or LA SB 130 was signed into law to give residents of Louisiana the chance to choose if legal “sports wagering activities and operations” should be allowed in their parish.

Now with the signature from the Governor, the bill has become law and is known as Act. No. 215.

This is not the first bill to be passed that will permit sports gambling for the state in the last two weeks. House Bill 357 was signed into law, effectively legalizing Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) contests.

The law was voted on by residents back in 2018 and currently, it is legal to compete in DFS in 47 of the 64 parishes.

The vote for the sports wagering law will be on November 3 and voters will know if the area they live in will have local sportsbooks and sports betting options by 10 p.m. that same day.

Once the voting is over and the law is approved by voters, the state’s government will have to draw up the rules, regulations, and protocols for the structure of sports betting in Louisiana.

Betting on sports is continuing to grow in the United States and for a state with many casinos this addition to the gambling market should bring in a lot of revenue to the state.

It may take some time to get sports betting fully up and running but when it is ready, residents will be able to enjoy betting on the Saints and wagering on their other favorite sports teams.
