Legal Online Sports Betting In Texas

With the overturn of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA, 1992), federal laws no longer prevent Texas from legalizing sports betting in any form. That said, Texas is still devoid of any sports betting opportunities at land-based, in-state venues. The only way for Texas bettors to wager on sports events currently is to register at an offshore online sportsbook that accepts TX residents. Since existing federal laws and Texas gambling laws do not criminalize the act of betting at online sportsbooks, it is 100% legal for residents to bet on sports events online.

We have created this page for the benefit of Texas residents who are confused about the legalities of online sports betting. This page has all that Texas residents need to know about their state’s sports betting laws. Also included within this content is a list of offshore licensed sports betting sites that accept Texas bettors.

Is Online Sports Betting Legal in Texas?

Answering the question of whether it is legal to bet on sports events in Texas is a bit difficult. While both federal and state laws have criminalized the act of accepting anything of value for the outcomes of sports matches, there isn’t a single word in Texas law books against Texas residents betting on sports events online. All federal and Texas sports betting laws do is bar commercial entities or individuals from operating sportsbooks and accepting sports wagers. TX residents are free to place wagers with any non-US-based sports betting website.

Texas itself does not have any online sportsbooks. The state does not even have land-sports betting facilities now that PASPA has been overturned (but these are likely coming in the near future). It is dangerous and illegal for residents to place bets with live bookies as such bookies are against the law in Texas. On the other hand, it is perfectly safe and legal for Texas residents to place bets on their favorite sports events at licensed offshore online sportsbooks.

Although offshore online sportsbooks are based in foreign countries and are not governed by Texas gambling laws, a number of Texas residents prefer signing up at them simply because it is safer to place bets with offshore online sportsbooks than with illegal local bookies.

Will Texas Residents Get into Trouble for Placing Bets Online?

So far, the state of Texas has not booked any of its residents for placing bets on sports events online. In fact, the state lacks the required law to charge any of its residents with illegal gambling. As previously mentioned, there isn’t a single law in Texas which clearly states that it is illegal for Texas residents to use online sports betting facilities. Texas bettors must understand that offshore online sportsbooks do not have their offices in Texas and are licensed in gambling jurisdictions far away from Texas and the US. Under these circumstances, they cannot be said to be violating Texas gambling laws or federal gambling laws in any way.

Texas sports betting laws, if any, are targeted at operators of online sportsbooks. While individual bettors have nothing to worry about, operators will find themselves deep in trouble with the law if they try to run a bookie business in the state.

Texas Sports Betting Laws

Texas sports betting laws aren’t in their own section of the penal code. Rather, experts believe that sports betting falls under the portion of the law that defines gambling activity. This can be found in Texas Penal Code Chapter 47. This section mainly defines and outlaws bookmaking – which is the facilitation of gambling activities – and lists penalties for violating the law. None of this actually applies to Texas sports bettors, of course, as the law is limited strictly to criminalizing in-state bookies and nothing more.

In addition to this, Texas residents are subject to several sports betting laws that further restrict gambling in the state. Before it was overturned, PASPA prevented the state from regulating sports betting, while the Wire Act of 1961 exists to keep bets from crossing state lines into states where such land-based wagering is legal (as it prohibits anyone from accepting a wager placed over a communicative device like the Internet or a phone). The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA, 2006) bars US financial institutions from processing “known” sports betting and online gambling payments (though the law is unenforced and does not work as advertised besides).

What these laws do not do, however, is prevent Texas residents from using online, offshore sportsbooks. Online sportsbooks located overseas are not regulated by state authorities, but rather by their own countries’ authorities, so they do not violate any federal or TX state laws. The Wire Act cannot tell someone in another country what to do, so it doesn’t have jurisdiction over these sites. Texas state law penalizes those who facilitate gambling and, like federal law, has no jurisdiction over online, offshore companies.

Are Online Sportsbooks Accepting Texas Residents Regulated By The State?

Texas does not offer its residents any sports betting facilities, offline or online. Betting enthusiasts might find plenty of live bookies around, but these bookies do not have any sports betting license issued by the state for the simple reason that the state does not issue any sports betting licenses. The state of Texas does not license or authorize any bookmaker to run online sportsbooks.

The online sportsbooks that accept Texas bettors are all based in foreign countries and licensed in remote gambling jurisdictions. They are products designed by reputed bookmaking companies, many of which were launched several years ago. They give the highest importance to customer satisfaction and go the extra mile to take care of customers who feel that they have gotten addicted to gambling. Texas bettors are therefore safe at these online sportsbooks, both from a legal and a financial standpoint.

Texas Sports Betting Markets

If Texas legalizes sports betting, it will be able to generate plenty of tax revenue. The state has a lot of sports betting potential as it is the home of several professional teams associated with a wide range of sports from baseball to soccer.

As we all know, Texans are very proud of their football teams and always support the home team... unless it's an intra-state rivalry which does happen quite a bit. In the NFL, the Houston Texans and Dallas Cowboys both have a big following but perhaps the Texas Longhorns rule the roost in the Lonestar State. Even though they are just a collegiate program, they rival their professional brothers and tower over all other in-state schools like Baylor, TCU, Texas Tech and even Texas A&M.

Also within the state's borders are three NBA teams—the Dallas Mavericks, the San Antonio Spurs, and the Houston Rockets. Texas also has a couple of Major League Baseball teams: the Texas Rangers and Houston Astros. Recently, the state got interested in soccer, and today it has two professional soccer teams in the Houston Dynamos and FC Dallas.

So, as you can see, this state offers no lack of opportunity for its residents to wager upon their favorite teams in a safe environment.

What Are The Different Types Of Odds?

There are three different types of odds: American, Decimal, and Fraction. American odds are the most common, while decimals are something you’ll rarely see. But it’s important to know all three, just in case. Just know that it does not matter if the odds are presented in American, decimal, or fraction – they’ve all got the same payout.

American odds have a (+) or (-) in front of series of numbers. The symbols can denote whether a team is a favorite (-) or underdog (+), and also show either what you have to stake to win $100, or what you stand to gain when you stake $100. If you see -120 odds, you have to risk $120 to win $100. This is because oddsmakers consider the team with those odds less likely to lose, eliminating some of the risk. If you see a team with +135 odds, you stand to gain $135 for every $100 you bet, because they’re the riskier bet.

Fractional odds are very easy to read. The Denominator represents what you have to stake, and the Numerator represents what you stand to gain based on that stake. So, if you see something with 3/1 odds, you stand to gain $3 for every $1 you risk. If you see something with 1/2 odds, you have to risk $2 to win $1.

Alright, so now let’s get to decimal odds. To calculate your payout on a team or player with decimal odds, multiply the odd by the amount you intend to wager. Let’s say you’re going to risk $100 on a team with 5.50 odds. 100 X 5.50 = 550. So your total payout would be $550, which is a profit of $450 plus your original stake of $100.

To prove that each odd has the same payout regardless of which type of odd it appears as we’ve provided an example. Each has a total profit of $550, based on a $100 bet.

+550 = 11/2 = 6.50.

Is Sports Betting Only For Experts?

Sports betting is not just for experts. It’s for anyone and everyone. While we don’t recommend flying in blind and placing a bet on just anything, you don’t have to be the most knowledgeable person on the subject, either. Doing some basic research like looking into how a spread works and whether or not a team has been able to cover the spreads it’s been given in previous games is enough to give you a fair chance to win that type of bet. Over time, you can become an expert, but you don’t have to wait until then to make your bets.

What Is The Biggest Mistake Texas Residents Make While Betting On Sports?

Texas residents are passionate sports fans. Each a diehard in their own right, the biggest mistake Texas residents make while betting on sports is betting with their heart and not their head. No matter how you feel about your Longhorns or Aggies, sometimes it is more prudent to bet against them on the moneyline than it is to just blindly put your faith (and money) on them.

Texas sports bettors should stick with strategy – researching a team’s statistics before they place any bets. Checking whether or not their Cowboys are able to cover the spread or if the Texans have been trending over or under the total is much better than just saying, “Well, I pull for this team, so I have to bet on them.” Love of a team should have nothing to do with how you bet on that team. Teams break hearts all the time. You shouldn’t let them break the bank while they’re at it.
